Farming Philosophy

“You, as a food buyer, have the distinct privilege of proactively participating in shaping the world your children will inherit.” — Joel Salatin

Organic

More than a business model, serious organic farming is a way of becoming involved with the life processes of a particular place. We strive to support these life cycles by following deep organic practices, which means that we view additives of any kind, whether to soils or animal feeds, with a certain suspicion, even when they are technically allowed organic procedures. In order to foster the soil fertility which is so critical to the health of our vegetables and pasture animals, we use methods like composting, crop rotation, green manures, and intensive rotational grazing so that, to a great extent, we don’t need to import fertilizers and pest control measures from outside the farm, chemical or otherwise. Our entire farm, including its grain fields, is certified organic through the New Hampshire Department of Agriculture, Markets, and Food, and is conserved under the Strafford County Conservation District.

Local

At Brookford Farm, we believe that we as small farmers havea pivotal role in the work of preserving local food supplies, decreasing energy consumption, and bringing neighbors together in authentic communities. We are fortunate to have a dedicated CSA (community supported agriculture) program which boasts social events like potlucks, public speakers, festivals, and performances. We also believe in the power of education, and strive to form alliances with students from early childhood to post-secondary educational organizations, and have an active on-farm apprenticeship program for young farmers.

Moreover, a number of us have spent formative years farming in northern Russia, and through that experience we have developed skills for season-extension and cold-weather farming which, in combination with the unusual biological diversity of our farm, allow us to offer people in the Seacoast area extraordinarily varied diets straight through the long winters of northern New England.

Delicious

Our products are renowned not only for their health and environmental benefits, but also because of their unsurpassed richness and flavor. As cooks as well as farmers, we delight in the beauty, quality, and excellence of our food. Brookford Farm produce, dairy, meats, and grains can be found in fine restaurants, retail stores, and home kitchens throughout the Seacoast area and beyond.
